Biography

Charles W. King, Jr. has been the Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance at James Madison University since July 1, 1996. Before coming to JMU, he was Vice President for Business Affairs at Radford University from 1991 to 1996 and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. During his tenure at UNCW from 1975 to 1991, he served in a variety of capacities as Assistant Dean of Students for Residence Life, Director of Housing, Director of Housing and Food Services, Director of Business Services, and Assistant Vice Chancellor.

He received his B.S. in 1974 and his M.A. in 1975 from Appalachian State University. He is a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers, the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers and currently serves as the Treasurer of the Council of State Senior Business Officers in Virginia.

As Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance at JMU, he is responsible for the planning, policies, and management of all fiscal and administrative support functions such as finance, accounting operations, accounting and reporting, payroll services, and business functions of the university. He is directly responsible for the management and direction of the university’s budget management; information technology efforts including computing support, information systems, and telecommunications; facilities management operations, facilities planning and construction, and capital outlay; administrative business services including card, dining, printing, parking, postal, and procurement services, arboretum, and bookstore; human resources, employee training, and performance; police and public safety including risk and transportation management; and all aspects involving intercollegiate athletics. In addition, he serves as the legislative liaison for the university.
